The Importance of SEER Ratings When Choosing AC Units

If you’ve been looking around for a new air conditioning unit, you may already have heard about SEER ratings. Let AirWorks, Inc., your local HVAC repair expert, give you an overview of what SEER is and how it can help you get the right air conditioning unit.

Choosing AC Units

What are SEER Ratings?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It basically measures how energy-efficient an air conditioning unit is. You will find a particular unit’s SEER rating on the yellow Energy Guide label, attached to the same area where the manufacturer’s label – the part that indicates the make, model, and serial number – is located.

Some Energy Guide labels indicate the SEER rating front and center on the label, while others indicate the estimated savings. In case of the latter, look at the model number itself: if it begins with, say, 13AC, then the air conditioner has a SEER rating of 13. The higher the number, the more energy-efficient it is. Appliances with low power requirements have fewer chances of power overloads, and therefore less air conditioner repair requirements.

Getting the Right Kind of Air Conditioning Unit

Federal regulations require air conditioning SEER ratings be at least 13 or 14, and can go as high as 25 – however several factors come into play, such as the size of your home, its own SEER rating, and the regional climate. Therefore, getting the right air conditioning unit for your home isn’t just a matter of switching out an air conditioning unit for a similar one. You will need an expert who can gather all these variables together and choose the air conditioning system that’s right for your home.
