Now that the warmer days of spring are just around the corner, this is the time that many homeowners begin to power down their heating systems for some well-deserved rest. Unfortunately, it’s also the time when furnace problems can start to surface. One such problem is when the furnace fans never seem to turn off. If your blower fan doesn’t stop running even after you’ve switched off your heating at the thermostat, the problem can be traced to a number of different causes.
Let our HVAC repair experts from Airworks, Inc., explain the causes of furnace fan malfunctions and show you solutions to help you deal with this common issue.
Checking the Thermostat
The first thing you want to check is your thermostat and its settings. On colder days, turn the thermostat to its lowest (coldest) possible setting. If in the summer, set the thermostat to its highest (warmest) setting instead. Afterward, give the furnace about five minutes to respond.
If nothing happens and the fans are still blowing out air through the registers, check the fan settings on the thermostat. This should be set to FAN-AUTO, but you may also turn it off completely from there.
Air Handler Settings
In some models, the air handler unit can often override fan settings from the thermostat. If your furnace has a switch for the blower fans on the air handler itself, you can simply turn it off from there. This is often a push-pull pin that serves as a manual override to keep the fan running even after the thermostat is set to an off state. This is done to allow the ducts to continuously air condition your home and improve indoor air quality (IAQ). If none of these steps resolve your issue, then it may be time to call in the professionals for help.
